  14. <p>     DIED. Dimitrios I, 77, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople
  15. and spiritual leader of the world's 150 million Eastern
  16. Orthodox Christians; in Istanbul. Elected in 1972, Dimitrios
  17. conferred with Pope John Paul II during his 1979 trip to Turkey
  18. and at the Vatican in 1987, promising to work toward closer ties
  19. between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. In
  20. 1987 Dimitrios became the first Ecumenical Patriarch in nearly
  21. 400 years to visit the Soviet Union and last year the first to
  22. visit the U.S.
